I am very sorry , to hear all this.But , it is better , that you know it now.Instead , to find it out , when you are already in Italy.When you have relatives , or other family there , it would have been much easier.
But , when you are there alone (with him) , you cannot tell , what will happen.Yes , you can stay for 3 months , on a tourist visa.But then you will not get , income from your work , yes ??

Was he willing , to refund you the money , for your loss of income , in those 3 months ???
And ,is he really honest with you ??Could it be , that he would try to let you do other work , when you would arrive in his place ???

It is all very suspicious to me.Let he come to you first , and then you can decide
