I have lived and traveled all over the US and never observed what you are suggesting; of course, I have usually traveled and lived within "polite" society...you know...areas where men demonstrate proper etiquette and respectful manners towards a lady. No decent man ever invites a woman to dinner and a movie, then have the insanely poor manners to suggest she get out her purse. If she complies, she is candidate for psychological counseling! Do not most sensible women in Europe assume that a decent man, if he is truly interested in a lady, will demonstrate his interest by showing up in fine clothing, bringing flowers or a small gift, and treating her like a princess!? Sure, they can also go together on a casual date, to the park, rent a boat, go bowling, jump out of an airplane, but he is nuts if he thinks he should not be paying for her entire evening! She is the singular reason he is there; if he simply wants someone to go something with, he should call his mother! 😀
